All girls at Mackellar study English from Year 7 through to Year 12.

Goal

For girls to become strong, articulate speakers and writers, and confident, imaginative and flexible thinkers

Girls are encouraged to take an active part in all events and activities, to richly value diversity and to see a wide range of perspectives.

 

Years 7 - 10

 

All students undertake English in these years, leading to the award of the School Certificate in year 10.

Students may elect to do Drama in year 9, which leads to the award of a grade in the School Certificate, after 2 years' study.

Year 11 Preliminary

 

The school offers the following English courses which students elect to study for their HSC; it is compulsory to study at least 2 units of English:

 

English Standard – 2 Units

English Advanced – 2 Units

English as a Second Language (ESL) – 2 Units

English Extension – 1 Unit

Fundamentals of English – 1 Unit

The faculty also offers:

Drama – 2 Units

Practical Writing Skills – 1 Unit

Year 12 Preliminary

English Advanced – 2 Units
English  as a Second Language (ESL) – 2 Units
English Extension 1 – 1 Unit

NOTE:
The Fundamentals of English course comprises 120 indicative hours of study and is non-examinable for the HSC. This course is offered at this school as a Preliminary course only. It enables students to receive more intensive tuition in their study and use of English undertaken in the English Standard course or the English (ESL) course.

In order to fulfil the requirements for the HSC, students must complete ONE Preliminary course and ONE HSC course from English Standard, English Advanced or English as a Second Language (ESL)

NOTE:
English ESL is subject to specific entry requirements.

English Extension is designed to be undertaken by students completing the English Advanced course. Students may choose, in addition:
The Preliminary English Extension course, which is a prerequisite for HSC English Extension 1. It consists of 60 indicative hours of study.

The HSC English Extension Course consists of 60 indicative hours of study.

The HSC English Extension 2 consists of a major work undertaken over 60 indicative hours of study. This course may only be undertaken in addition to HSC Extension 1.
